Introducing Truehope OmegaPower

Truehope OmegaPower is a special blend of high quality fish oils from 100% wild North Atlantic salmon, mackerel, anchovy and sardine. OmegaPower is formulated to provide an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, as well as a beneficial ratio of essential fatty acids. Adequate amounts of these fatty acids are essential for proper mental and cardiovascular health as well as general wellbeing.

Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are fatty acids that we must obtain from our diet because our bodies cannot make them. Most of the fats that we consume in the diet are used by the body for fuel or energy, but the essential fats have biological function.

Technically there are two essential fatty acids, alpha-linolenic acid (an omega-3) and linoleic acid (an omega-6). Both are relatively short with eighteen carbon atoms in their chemical structure. The body is able to produce some of the necessary longer chain fatty acids from these two essential fats, but it is very slow and certainly not equal to dietary intake. This is why some argue that the families of omega-3 and omega-6 fats, rather than the two alone, are essential.

Omega-6 fatty acids are more common in the diet than are omega-3, and that is why we have chosen to develop a product with a focus on omega-3 fatty acids, specifically eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These two omega-3 fats are found predominantly in ocean fish and other marine sources.

EPA is a precursor for three groups of signaling molecules in the body which are the prostaglandins, the thromboxanes and the leukotrienes. That’s a mouthful, and you haven’t even eaten anything yet!

Each of these groups of signaling molecules has specialized functions, but they do share some common purposes, and those are where the immune and cardiovascular systems overlap. Together they help your body to fight infection and facilitate repair as part of the immune response. The prostaglandins are the most diverse signaling group and some of their more specialized functions include inducing labour, hormone regulation, thermoregulation, and pain response.

DHA is the most abundant omega-3 fatty acid in the brain and retina. DHA comprises 40% of the polyunsaturated fatty acids in the brain and 60% of the polyunsaturated fats in the retina. Fifty percent of the weight of a neuron's plasma membrane is composed of DHA. DHA helps to modulate the transport of compounds like choline and glycine into neurons as well as the function of certain potassium channels.

Both EPA and DHA are connected with mental wellness - not to mention their other known health benefits. Truehope is happy to now include this important part of the family of essential nutrients in the family of Truehope formulas to promote a more complete nutritional balance.
