Mary Beth's daughter, Gracie, showed signs of depression from the time she was a young child. Mary Beth says, “The older she got, the more she was able to express that she did not want to be alive."
"We tried different psychiatrists…we tried therapists, and our pediatrician," Mary Beth recalls, "and pretty much across the board everyone suggested that we…give [Gracie] drugs.” Every time Mary Beth considered giving her daughter antidepressants she felt uncomfortable with the idea.
But finally, when Gracie was 11, her condition was so severe that Mary Beth feared for the safety of her other children. It seemed that medications might be necessary after all, so Mary Beth met with the psychiatrist and began to consider Gracie’s options. After reviewing what the psychiatrist had recommended, both Mary Beth and her husband continued to feel apprehensive about putting their daughter on antidepressants.
A day later, Mary Beth's husband came home with the Discover magazine, which included a feature article on EMPowerplus as a treatment for mood disorders. Mary Beth commented, “I picked it up, because I thought ‘vitamins sound better’ and I read the article, and it was a life-changing moment.”
Today, Gracie functions normally and enjoys life. “It’s just so wonderful to see her be able to enjoy life, because there was no enjoyment of life at all before,” says Mary Beth.
